Twelve years she'd stayed away from Staunton, avoiding her hometown and missing her parents, to not have to do the very thing she was about to do. Emma took a deep breath and steered her car onto the street that housed the Staunton Police Department. She had no other choice. There was only one man who could help her figure this out.
She parked in front of the station, ignoring all the little pieces of glass that rained off her as she ran up the steps and pulled open the heavy front door. The entire station fell silent as she strode to the front desk, leaving a trail of leaves and little bits of broken glass behind her.
"I need to see Detective Adam Marshall. It's an emergency." She looked around the lobby. "I don't even know what time it is. Is he even here?"
"He's still here." The officer behind the desk reached for the phone. "What happened, miss? Do you need a medic?"
"No! I'm fine. I mean, I'm not, but I am. Can you just get Detective Marshall for me, please?"
He set the phone back on the receiver. "Just wait right here and I'll get him."
"Don't worry." Emma crossed her arms over her chest. "I'm not going anywhere."

***

"Sir?"
Adam looked up at the sound of the voice and tap on his office door. "What's up, Murphy?"
"There is a—woman—at the desk demanding to see you. She says it's an emergency."
Adam narrowed his eyes at the young uniformed officer. The other man had a tendency toward the dramatic, but he'd proven himself in the field. At the moment, he looked really concerned. "Are you not sure if she is a woman?"
Officer Murphy shook his head. "It's not that. You, um, have to see for yourself."
"Okay." Adam pushed his chair back from his desk and stood up. "Show me what you got."
Adam followed him out to the lobby desk but froze when he saw the woman standing there. Sticks and leaves tangled in her shoulder-length brown waves. Dirt and dried blood smudged her face, a tear in her jeans bared a scraped knee, and her light blue fleece jacket had a variety of colorful stains on it. He hadn't seen her in so long he might not have recognized her under all the debris, except he'd know that woman anywhere.
"Emma." He walked a little closer. "What happened?" What he really wanted to ask was What are you doing here?
"We need to talk." She glanced around at all the people staring at them. "In private." Emma leaned in a little, lowering her voice, as though it would matter. "It's about a crime."
He motioned toward the way he'd come. "We can talk in my office." To Murphy he said, "Please get Ms. Thomas a bottle of water."
"Yes, sir." Officer Murphy disappeared in the direction of the break room, and Adam led Emma to his office.
When they were inside and the door was closed, Emma collapsed into one of the chairs, shaking. Tears ran down her face, leaving streaks in the dirt as they trailed to her chin and dropped onto the front of her jacket.
Adam perched awkwardly on the edge of his desk, a box of tissues extended to her. Emma grabbed a couple and wiped at her eyes, then blew her nose.
"I'm sorry. I'm so not a crier." She threw the tissues in the trash can. Her hands shook noticeably.
He remembered that about her. "It's the adrenaline dump. Nothing to apologize for." A knock sounded on the door. "Come in!" Adam called.
Officer Murphy walked in and handed the bottle of water to Emma. "Do you need anything else, miss?"
She shook her head, and Adam gave him a nod of dismissal.
"So, are you going to tell me what happened?" Adam finally asked. And maybe why you specifically asked for me out of all the cops in this precinct.
Emma nodded and wrung her hands in her lap. "Yes. I just—I need a minute to gather my thoughts."
"How did you know I'd even be here?"
She shrugged. "I didn't. I just hoped you would be."

On the way there, I find myself staring down the barrel of a pistol without a safety, in the form of smooth thighs, arresting green eyes, and curves that could charm a sapling into a mighty oak.

But it turns out my old buddy’s gone and thrown me another curveball: the nymph with the ass that won’t quit? That’s his eighteen-year-old little girl. She’s running from something, but I’m not about to let anyone lay a finger on this green-eyed angel.

I’ll put my life on the line to keep her safe, because that’s what good Daddies do.

Excerpt

A gust of wind blows the playing cards off the table. Norah drops to her knees to collect the deck before it’s lost. I join her, stuffing the cards in the box as I grab them.
“Cold front’s moving in. I’ll go split some wood.” I hand her the box of cards and then run around back to fetch the axe. Beneath the awning off the garage sits a pile of logs protected from the elements by a blue tarp.
I grab an armful of logs and take them to the chopping block. I bust through half a dozen before I feel like I’m being watched. When I turn, I find Norah standing there, watching me.
“Enjoying the show?” I grab a fresh log. She shivers as if shaking off a trance.
“I’ll start bringing these in.” She fills her arms with wood and then runs off, returning just as the first drop of rain hits the back of my neck. I break up the last log and help her gather the remaining pieces. We’re halfway to the house when the sky opens up, dumping frigid water down on top of us.
“Better make a run for it,” I yell.
We sprint toward the house. Norah reaches the porch before I do, dumping her pile on the porch with the first load so she can open the door. I rush inside, drop my wood by the fireplace, then hurry back to help her with the rest.
Thunder rumbles in the distance. My T-shirt clings to my chest and back, and my jeans feel like they’ve gained thirty pounds.
“It got so cold so fast.” Norah rubs her arms. Even in the dim, gray light, I can make out the points of her nipples through her tank top. My cock perks up as I imagine fixing my mouth to her breast, tonguing her nipple through her shirt. I picture her without the shirt altogether. Soft, creamy skin. Round, jiggly tits. Stiff nipples.
She catches me staring, and rather than cover herself, she folds her arms and shoves her breasts together. Forcing myself to look away is like telling a wolf not stalk a rabbit, or a lion not to lick its chops.
Someday soon, Norah and I are going to sit down and discuss what to do about this thing between us. It’s time to set some ground rules, like no more paper-thin tank tops.
“Go dry off,” I tell her. “I’ll start the fire.”
She looks like she wants to say something, then purses her lips. As soon as I hear the bathroom door close, I let out a breath.
“Fuck...” This isn’t good. I have to get myself under control before she comes back.
I stack the logs in the fireplace, tuck a crumpled piece of paper into the center, then light it with a match. The fire crackles to life as another rumble of thunder shakes the cabin. The storm will be on top of us in a few minutes.
I peel my wet shirt off and toss it in the washer along with my jeans. My boxers are damp, but I leave them on so I don’t accidentally give Norah and eyeful on my way up to the loft. I’m about to head upstairs for dry clothes when I spot Norah standing by the fire, gripping a towel around herself that barely covers her ass.
She eyes me through strands of rain-soaked hair. I know she’s naked under the towel, and I know all it would take to see her in all her glory is a swift flick of the wrist.
“Silas,” she says. I don’t move a muscle. She moves closer, her bare feet sinking into the rug with every step.
My muscles tense like they’re gearing up for a fight.
She drops her towel, and my pulse jackknifes.
“I want you.” She takes another step. I can’t stop my gaze from drinking her in, and soon enough, I’m drunk. The firelight flickers off her bare skin. She’s even more beautiful than I imagined.
The boxers I’m wearing are a size too small. They don’t stand a chance once my cock starts to swell. She glances down at my bulge and her lips drift apart. I catch the glint of her teeth and the tip of her soft, pink tongue as she wets her mouth.
“Norah, we talked about this. I’m too old for you.”
“Actually, you’ve avoided talking about this. And you’re the only one who thinks you’re too old for me.”

"Move around," Nick says. "It'll help flush out the lactic acid in your system."
I nod, too exhausted to reply, and walk back and forth with my fingers linked behind my head. A breeze washes over my face, cooling me, but still my lungs are screaming. I can't seem to suck in enough air.
Nick strides over to me. "You want your breathing to come from deep in your diaphragm. Right here," he says, placing one hand on the curve of my back and the other just below my rib cage, applying pressure. "Can you feel that?" His gaze rakes over my face, painfully slow, as though he's afraid to miss something.
Is he kidding? His palms are burning holes in my shirt, making me dizzy, and he wants to know if I can feel that? Suddenly I go from barely being able to retain oxygen in my lungs to a total inability to breathe at all. I should be shocked that after all this time a simple touch from him has the power to steal my breath, but after what happened between us at the Tipsy Teakettle, nothing surprises me anymore.
Stepping away, I pick up the water bottle lying on the ground by his feet and gulp some down, the liquid sloshing around in my stomach.
"Drink it slowly. Otherwise you'll throw up," he says, tugging on my ponytail. My heart trips in my chest at the way his voice dips with his playful scolding. Sticking out my tongue, I squirt some water at him and stretch my aching muscles. Nick does his own form of post run recovery, which involves some strange yoga poses mixed with light strength exercises. I squeeze my eyes shut when I hear him groan, the sound similar to those he once murmured during sex.
After he's done, he uses the hem of his T-shirt to wipe his neck and forehead. His chest expands and retracts with his breathing, his skin glistening. I swallow thickly, watching a bead of sweat travel down the length of his torso and absorb into his mesh shorts. Everything about Nick is corded muscle and hard, chiseled angles and lines. My eyes drop to his hands resting on his hips, and I have an overwhelming urge to feel them on me. My whole body clenches as I remember exactly what those fingers are capable of.
A dog barks, snapping me out of my haze. I focus on the college-age guy playing fetch with a golden retriever across the park and wait for my heart rate to return to normal.
"It's okay, you know."
"What is?" I ask.
"To check me out," Nick says, smug and without shame. "Don't think I didn't notice your little eye dance."
I balk. "I wasn't checking you out. You were doing those weird poses, and I was curious."
He laughs, deep and sexy, erasing all of my common sense. His soles scuff against the gravel as he saunters toward me. He stops and stands so close I can feel the heat radiating off his body and see the faint scar above his left eyebrow—a casualty from back in my diner days when I accidentally opened the freezer door into his face.
When he speaks, his words send a shiver down my spine. "You forget, Lillie, I know your blush."
My breath hitches, and his smile grows into that destructive grin that's always been deadly to me. I force my eyes away, over to the other side of the parking lot where a woman is adjusting a set of ankle weights, back to the guy still tossing a tennis ball with his dog, down at my grungy shoelaces, anywhere other than at him.
"At least I used to," Nick says, low and hoarse. "Before . . ."
He settles a hand on the crook of my neck, his thumb ghosting along my collarbone, and everything inside me ignites, alive and volatile. I look at him, and the intensity in his stare causes a fresh wave of heat to rush through me. I lean toward him, pulled by invisible fingers. His gaze flicks to my mouth, and as if on their own volition, my lips part. My breath comes in shallow gasps, my body humming in anticipation, waiting for him to pin me against my truck and kiss me the way he did at the Tipsy Teakettle. The way he used to.
