Gemma stood near the dungeon entrance and watched as Russell approached a kneeling woman. When he crouched down and cupped her chin, she cursed herself for being unable to look away.

His intense stare at the bar had unnerved her and intrigued her at the same time. Something in his eyes made her want to ask a million questions and get to know him. His demeanor had changed when he found out she was married to Matthew.

That made her curse her family all over again. Yes, they were legally married. No, they were not in love or even sleeping together. In the best of times, they were friends. But most days, they were strangers who didn’t even live together anymore. They had their own lives, and that was how they liked it. If their world hadn’t exploded—literally—she might have been divorced by now, and maybe she would be the one being strapped to the cross by the gorgeous silver fox across the dungeon.

She shook her head and went to find a place to sit. There was no sign the two even liked the same things in the bedroom, and here she was fantasizing about him. Get a grip, Gemma. You’ll be back in London before you know it.

At least she hoped so. She wasn’t sure what the future looked like after the harrowing experience of barely escaping death and Matthew shoving her onto a plane against her will. And now, nobody could locate Matthew. She wanted to reach out to Kendall, but he had been adamant about her not contacting anyone for fear that the people trying to kill them might find her.

She shuddered and took one more look at Russell and the woman he was with. Just in time to see him unfurl a single tail whip. A loud crack echoed through the room and she pushed open the door and left the dungeon.

EXCERPT

“You’re sorry?” The deep husky voice came from behind. Jolting, she dropped her apron in startled surprise. With her hand over her chest, trying to keep her heart from bursting through it pounded so hard, she turned.
Unprepared for what she saw, her mouth fell open and her heart lodged in her throat.
She didn’t immediately recognize him. For the first few seconds, all she saw was his height and facial hair. It wasn’t until she scanned up to his eyes. Those glacier-colored pools. She’d never forget them. The light blue irises burned as they bored into her.
The mohawk was gone. In its place, thick dark hair hung just past his chin. Or where she thought his chin would be. He wore a full beard trimmed neatly. It hid the beautiful features she remembered from his youth. Oh, his chin dimple. The little divot she wanted to poke so badly when he was a kid couldn’t be seen.
“Jacob?” she whispered, and her heart resumed its rapid beats for a completely new reason. Was it really him or just another dream of them meeting up again? If she moved, he might disappear. She might wake up. So, she stood perfectly still, staring at him.
He kept his distance, just inside the back room, with the door closed behind him. Muffled rock music came through the walls, along with inaudible conversations from the few patrons of the bar. However, in that room, the heavy silence weighed her down.
In her dreams, he’d speak, but often so softly, she barely heard him. Licking her bottom lip, she worried she’d forgotten his true voice. Then again, would he sound the same seven years later? She willed him to speak, silently pleading with him to say something, anything, just to hear him again. What he’d said before, when she had her back to him, it didn’t count. She wasn’t paying attention. She didn’t know it was him. She did now. He had her full attention. If he would just speak.
Instead, he remained stock-still. His tall, lean body blocked the only exit, but she didn’t feel trapped. If anything, there was far too much space between them. As though her feet were cemented to the floor, unable to move, she took the opportunity to assess him. The grown version of him.
Starting at his feet, scuffed motorcycle boots made her grin. She’d imagined him riding the long hours from Montana to Ohio with the wind ripping through the bit of hair that escaped the bottom of his helmet.
Loose-fitting, faded jeans were torn at his left knee with a chain attached to his belt loop. The left side of her mouth curled upward in an involuntary half grin as she spotted the small—considering he was from Montana, home to many a cowboy—belt buckle.
He wore a faded Metallica t-shirt, which he’d loosely tucked into his jeans. Over it, as was the tradition for every biker, was his cut. Those leather vests were a second skin, only coming off to sleep, and that was if they didn’t pass out first.
She took a moment to appreciate his club’s little patches. Some were standard, like the four F’s he had on his side. Every club had a version of it. She guessed he stood for “Fury forever, forever Fury.” Her father’s was RFFR which stood for “Roughnecks forever, forever Roughnecks.” The diamond on his left shoulder with “1%” in it was far too familiar. His club was an outlaw club, too.
The American Motorcyclist Association commented forever ago that 99% of motorcyclists were law-abiding citizens, the implication being the last one percent were outlaws. It became a badge of honor to clubs like the Roughneck Riders and, apparently, Odin’s Fury.
Beneath his outlaw patch, a “Member” tag was stitched under his road name: Romeo. Immediately that half-smile she had for his belt buckle dropped. Heat flamed in her cheeks. What did that mean? A spike of irrational jealousy rippled through her. The idea of him earning a reputation for seducing women had her clenching her jaw, despite knowing it was a ridiculous reaction.
“Why’d you stop writing?” His voice sounded restrained.
His question, his voice—deeper than she remembered, yanked her out of her insecurity. She had no business caring. She had no claim on him. He wanted to be Romeo, some Lothario biker thinking he’s God’s gift to women, let him. It wasn’t any skin off her nose.
Pulling the lollipop from her mouth, she lifted her chin and took a deep breath. “My dad died.” She hadn’t said those words in a few years. She didn’t get out and mingle all that often—pretty much stuck with the Roughneck Riders family and they all knew. Ducky Oliveira died for his club.

BLURB

Everyone has dreams when they are young.
And mine came to an abrupt halt.

I changed as a man, as a person, my soul was damaged beyond repair.
So I turned into someone everyone would hate.
Because I hate everyone and everything.
I’m furious at the world.
I don’t see that changing anytime soon.
But then it does change.
And if there is one thing I am not good at, it’s adapting.

Hope, Bullseye’s daughter, jump starts my soul again.
I hate it.
I love it.
I need her.
But I can’t have her.
She’s my friend’s daughter, for one.
For two, she’s way too damn young for the likes of me.
Three? She’s got a kid.
And everyone knows how I feel about kids.

Vermin. Loud. Annoying.
Wonderful. Beautiful. Precious.
The voice inside my head is stupid.
It wants and wants but I won’t allow myself to have it.
I don’t deserve to have it.
There’s no hope for me.
Even if hope is staring me in the face.
I have to focus on me. My business. I’m on a case.
Women are dying.
And it’s all because of me.
I have to protect what I care about for once in my life.
I failed once and I refuse to do it again.

How can I love her, when hate is all I’ve ever known?

EXCERPT

“Can I talk to you for a second, Hope?” I ask her between tight teeth. There is no fucking way another man is taking my woman out on a date.
“Sure,” she chirps and begins to walk in front of me.
My eyes eat her up, watching her plump ass shake under that dress. Jesus, is she wearing anything under it? Her heels click against the hardwood floors and she opens her bedroom door to invite me in.
Bullseye gives me a curious glance but doesn’t think much of it when I keep the door open.
“Can this be quick?” Hope asks, staring at her phone. “Benji will be here any minute.”
I rub a hand over my mouth and take a deep breath. “What the hell are you doing? You can’t go out with… Benji.” I nearly spit his name as I say it. I don’t like the guy. I used to, but not anymore.
“Why not? He’s around my age. He is kind. He is interested in Faith—”
“—He asked about her?” I grind my teeth together at his audacity. “She is m—” I almost say ‘she’s my little girl’, but I catch myself. I’m so messed up in the head. I don’t know when I started thinking that. I’ve barely spent any time with her. “Why are you doing this to me?” I whisper, realizing how selfish I sound.
“Doing this to you? I’m not doing anything to you, Forrest. I told you I wasn’t going to wait around. You said you didn’t want me. You pushed me away.”
“He isn’t allowed to have you,” I growl, taking a step forward, readying myself to rip that dress off her and show her who she really belongs to.
Hope shoves me in the chest and points her finger at me. “You arrogant bastard. You don’t want me but no one else can have me? Fuck you, Forrest. You had your chance and guess what?”
“Hope! Benji is here!” Bullseye calls out from the kitchen.
Hope lowers her voice and shoves me again. “And you aren’t going to have another one. You’re going to watch me walk out of here looking fucking amazing and you’re going to wish you weren’t being a coward.” She thrusts her shoulders back and clutches her black billfold against her chest.
Hope goes to walk around and I wrap my hand around her to stop her, tugging her against me. I don’t give her time to think. I clutch the back of her neck with my hand and yank her to me, pressing my lips against hers.
My soul is righted as soon as our lips meet. All the pain disappears; all the burdens I’ve made myself carry melt away. I want to admit everything I am to her. No other man can have these lips of hers. No other man can make her gasp and clutch onto them like I can.
Maybe I am an arrogant man. I never considered myself one.
But I am when it comes to her.
No one else can have my slice of heaven, not when I’m finally accepting her light.
She rips her lips from mine and before I can blink, her palm meets my cheek. “How fucking dare you,” she hisses. “You kiss me before I meet with another man, why?”
I wrap my hand around her throat and shove her against the wall, pressing my body against hers. My cock is pressed against her thigh and her swollen lips part, her lipstick smeared and all fucked up from our kiss.
Good.
“So when you’re with him, all you can think about, all you can taste, is me.”
“You are out of your damn mind if you think I’m going to be thinking about you at all.”
“Hope!” Bullseye calls out again, and I take a step back.
“Yeah, better get away from me,” she sneers. “Or you’ll have to deal with Daddy.”
My heart plummets. I screwed up.
“You better hope you got everything you wanted out of that kiss because that’s the last time you ever touch me.” She cleans the outline of her lips with her thumb, fixing the evidence of our kiss. “God, you’re unbelievable,” she scoffs.

EXCERPT

I glanced up at the small sound, pulling off my headphones, a smile growing as Aya stood in the open doorway to my hotel room. I’d been unable to pick her up from her summer camp, so I hadn’t known when, exactly, I’d get to see her.
I rushed forward and pulled her into my arms. “I thought you were going to call me when you were home from your program.”
She wrapped her arms around me. “I missed you too much to wait another day.”
“Welcome to Denver,” I said with a laugh.
She smiled. “Have you seen anything other than the hotel room?”
“Nope.” I rolled my eyes. “Tour life.”
She nuzzled into my chest, where happy bubbles exploded. I settled my hand at the base of her neck, fingers tangled in her thick hair. She tipped her head back, and I lowered my mouth. I’d missed kissing Aya. The soft brush of her mouth against mine, her subtle shift closer, the parting of her lips as she opened for me—I’d experienced it before, but electricity still jolted down my spine and more fizziness blossomed in my chest.
I delved in deeper, needing her. She tilted her head, granting me more access.
“Well, I guess you two are glad to see each other.” Cam’s amused voice drifted across the room.
I lifted my head, arms still wrapped around my girl. “Yeah. I’m ecstatic.”
He smiled, wider and brighter than I’d seen before. “Good. Glad to have you back with us, Aya. And Steve will be here in ten minutes.”
Cam winked before ambling off.
“Cam knew you were coming,” I said, shuffling back enough so I could see her face.
She nodded. “I wanted it to be a surprise.”
“The best.”
She rose on her tiptoes and kissed me again. I moaned as her tongue brushed against mine. I yanked my head back and stared down at her, breathing hard. “Steve’ll be here soon.” That sounded more like a groan than words, but I didn’t want to stop.
I also wouldn’t embarrass Aya. No way would I have Steve see any part of her beautiful, sleek body, but I needed her naked. I needed to be inside her.
Her cool fingers touched my cheek, slipped down to the corner of my mouth. They trembled slightly, so I turned and kissed them.
“Maybe I shouldn’t have come.”
“You most definitely should have.”
“But now we’re both…” She blushed but held my gaze.
I leaned forward, inhaling her soft scent. “I’m going to get you alone, to myself, soon,” I murmured before I nipped her ear. She yelped just as the suite door slammed shut.
“Hey, Nash, Cam said he wants to leave for the stadium in an hour.” Steve stopped in the doorway. He smiled as he took in Aya. I did, too. She wore a long sundress that left her shoulders bare. Low-heeled sandals showed off her bright green toenails. They matched the leaves in her floral-print dress. Her long hair was loose, waving over her shoulders and down her back.
Her makeup was light, soft, natural, and most of her lip gloss had rubbed off—on my mouth no doubt. I smiled, satisfaction blooming at the plump pinkness of her lips. She was so beautiful.
“Good to see you, Aya. How was MIT?”
A faint shudder rippled down from her shoulders. “Okay. I’m glad to be finished.”
Steve nodded.
I grabbed her hand and tugged her toward my bed. “Why just okay? What didn’t you tell me? Was that girl mean again?”
“We’re leaving in an hour,” Steve reminded me. “Want something sent up before we have to go?”
I looked at Aya, who shook her head. There’d be plenty to eat at the stadium, all part of the standard contract, so I shook my head, too.
“Tell me everything,” I said.
She dropped her gaze to her hands, which were now clasped in her lap. “I missed you, “ she blurted.
“I missed you, too,” I said. I lay down on the unmade bed and pulled her to my chest. She snuggled close.
“No, I mean I really missed you. And, yeah, Li was a problem, but I dealt with it.”
She caught me up on the camp, and I filled her in on our more recent shows. “I’ve been trying to write a few songs for the album Asher wants me to make.”
She drew patterns on my chest, causing goose bumps to ripple over my arms and my nipples to tighten. Fuck. This girl owned my body.
“How’s that going?” she asked.
I grunted. She lifted her head and stacked her palms, resting her chin on them. Her violet eyes held mine. “Your songs give me chills. I’ve seen you perform. I have no doubt that you’re going to make something amazing.”
I swallowed the lump in my throat, unable to tell her how much those words meant to me.

I didn’t even have time to catch my breath before he claimed my mouth, stealing whatever dregs of air remained in my lungs. His fingers twisted into my hair, securing me to him as he shoved me against the cool stainless steel. It bit into my lower back, and I clutched it until my fingers strained from the pressure, trying desperately to ward off the flutter taking over deep in my belly.
I don’t want this.
Lie.
I don’t want him.
Lie.
“Stop fucking fighting it,” he demanded between kisses, pressing in between my hips, making me moan into his mouth.
I released the countertop, letting him lift me with ease until I was seated atop it, able to wrap my legs around his middle. To yank his shirt off.
This means nothing,” I panted as it fell to the floor, my voice a breathy growl.
“Absolutely nothing,” he agreed with a smirk.
