*** BONUS SCENE ***
"Ugh. Do we have to go in there?" Macey groaned
pausing at the kitchen door.
"Let's just get it over with." I raked a hand over
my head just as my cell vibrated. Macey shot me as curious glare as I read the
incoming text.
"I need to take this," I said flicking my head to
the door. "Go play nice."
"Jerk," she mumbled under her breath and
disappeared into the kitchen. My fingers flew across the screen, texting Luke
back. Message sent, I slipped the phone into my pocket.
Gentry collared me the second I joined them. "And this
giant here is Maverick." His voice was cheery. Light.
What a fucking sham. He clapped me on the back and I
stiffened at the fake display for our new houseguests, his brother and niece.
My eyes landed on the man across the island. The resemblance to Gentry was
uncanny and although it was misdirected, I couldn’t help the flare of anger I
felt at the stranger. And then my gaze slid to his daughter ... and fuck ...
no!
It couldn't be.
It could—
I glanced over at Kyle and that motherfucker grinned.
Fuck.
It was her. The girl from the last summer. I remembered … my
body remembered.
Double fuck.
She was different somehow. I saw it as my eyes swept over
her. Long dark hair hanging around her face like a shield. Soft lips. Lips I’d
tasted. But it was her eyes. Guarded and wary, they held a darkness I wanted to
know.
Jesus.
Gentry had warned me to stay away from his niece. Asked me
to play nice, but to leave babysitting duties to Kyle and Summer. What a
fucking irony. He couldn’t have known that I knew her—it was impossible. But
here she was standing in my kitchen. My house. Breathing the same air as me.
Shit.
Gentry nudged me into action and I stuttered out, “hi,” as I
shirked him off and folded my arms over my chest, a storm of emotions rumbling
in my chest.
How the fuck had this happened?
Me and Stone were going to have serious words later.
Her eyes left mine, raking down my body. Looked like I
wasn’t the only one who remembered. Things just got a whole lot more
complicated. I’d planned to heed Gentry’s warning—to ignore the new girl. Even
if she was family.
A little bit of puke rushed up my throat and I swallowed it
down. She was family. My step cousin and I’d almost … but it was okay. We
hadn’t. And it wasn’t like we were blood-related. It was totally fine. If it
ever did come out—which I’d make sure it never did—it wasn’t like we knew what
we were to one another.
Her blatant appraisal of me continued and I raised an
eyebrow at her when she finally reached my face. The color drained from her
cheeks and she dropped her gaze. And damn if it didn’t sting. When she peeked
back up at me, I schooled my expression. I couldn’t let her see the effect she
was having on me. Not here. Not now.
Not ever, a voice whispered.
She was damaged, broken. She didn’t need me crashing into
her life. And I didn’t need her messing things up for me any more than they
already were. No. We’d just have to forget that night last summer ever
happened. But from the way she was trying not to look at me, and the way my
dick stirred in my shorts, I knew it wasn’t going to be that straightforward.
Gentry cleared his throat, breaking our stand-off. “Now
everyone’s present, I’d just like to say how happy we are to have you both
here…”
Her eyes flickered shut. She didn’t want to be here just as
much as I didn’t want her here. This was bad—for everyone. So even though I
remembered—even though I wanted to pick up where we left off all those months
ago—I had to force it down. To ignore it.
I had to stay the fuck away from Eloise Stone.
For all our sakes.
