EXCERPT
This is what life looks like when you’re in love with someone who is actively lost in their addiction. The worst is always to be assumed because the worst is what always happens. An overdose is inevitable and the fatal consequence is probable. You can’t live your entire life being addicted to heroin and not expect it to kill you eventually.
And when you’re on the other side, the side that is simply on the outside looking in, you can’t help but watch in slow motion as it all unfolds. Since I met Ander, my life took a turn for the worst and I was thrust into the darkness without a light to guide me. Our relationship was riddled with lies and broken promises, all wrapped neatly with a bow laced with bad news.
I’m deflated. Any small glimmer of hope or happiness that I was once feeling is stolen within an instance.
“What if something happened to him?” My words come out as a whisper and tears prick the corners of my eyes.
I begin to hyperventilate as the tears pour from my eyes. I can’t breathe. I’m suffocating in my sorrow. Before, I thought that I had known what it felt like to drown. I drowned in the waves of Ander, and I learned how to breathe underwater. But this—this is something that I don’t know how to handle.
I can’t fucking breathe.
