CJ tried to keep her eyes off him. After all, he was Violet’s date. Never mind the fact that he was the best-looking guy in the bar, the most interesting thing to happen in Oak Bend since Sherry brought in the Fifty Shades of Grey series to their little local library, and currently leaning over the pool table, putting some prime all-American male on display. CJ let her eyes roam over his arms, the way his shirt bunched up a bit over his biceps. One of his hands rested on the green felt, propping the pool cue, while the other held the cue loosely as he eyed his shot. Cheeks hot, she dragged her eyes over his backside—she liked a man who filled out his jeans the way he did—and glanced at Violet, ready to beg for forgiveness. But Violet had her back to the table, talking to a few guys they had gone to school with. CJ looked back at Peyton when she heard the clack of the cue ball. It wasn’t pretty, but after a second of bumping around, it dropped into the pocket. “What shot would you have taken?” he asked her as he eyed the table again. “The five at the side,” she answered without hesitation. He swung his gaze to the five and shrugged, but he nodded. The last shot had left him with nothing good this time, so CJ’s eyes wandered over his backside again. “You’re dry.” CJ stared at him blankly when he joined her at the high-top table. Watching the fluid motion of his body moving around the table had been entertaining, and while her panties hadn’t melted, she was aroused enough to feel flustered by his comment.

“You should get your money back if this is what they taught you.” I could hear the teasing, annoyed note in his voice, and my own irritation rose.
“You’re bigger than me, stronger.” I turned my head to the side so I could look at him, but that was a foolish move, as it brought our mouths dangerously close together. “I don’t have my pepper spray, and I don’t have the added benefit of fearing for my life and getting that kick of adrenaline.”
My breath caught, my lungs tightening, when this dark, strange look covered his face.
“You should be afraid right now, moy svet.” His words were low… deadly. “You should be more afraid of me than anything else in the dark.” He leaned in an inch. “If you knew who I truly was, you wouldn't be so close to me.”
I looked down at where his hand gripped the rope on either side of me, the tattoos on his fingers sneaking up the back of his hand disappearing and going up his wrist and forearm. I’d never been one to think tattoos were attractive, but on Arlo, it made him brutally beautiful to me.

“Excuse me, miss?”
My head snapped to the left, and my lips parted as my eyes widened.
Maybe I’d just made all of this up in my head. Maybe having a baby made new mothers so exhausted that once they fell asleep, dreams took over and played tricks on their minds.

I completely understood the intention behind his words and truly appreciated them, but I had to correct him. I leaned closer and said, “Soon-to-be ex-wife.”
Beck returned his gaze to me, and his lips twitched. “Why don’t we go for a walk outside?” he suggested. “You don’t need to be around this douchebag any longer, not when you’ve got this sweet little baby in your arms.”
No, I didn’t.
And at the mention of my daughter, I felt the reality of the situation hit me. This was going to be a nightmare.
“Okay,” I rasped, turning fully toward him.
Beck shifted his body, reached his hand behind me, and allowed it to settle at the small of my back.
Tingles shot up my spine as he urged me in the direction of the exit.
