Excerpt: Pausing at the door, I close it behind her as her eyes wander around the house. From the floors to the vaulted ceilings and exposed old beams, she takes everything in, a smile playing on her lips, a glint in her eyes.

“Wow,” she says breathlessly, removing her jacket.

Fuck, I could say the same about her. She’s not wearing a dress but one of those romper things instead. Short shorts, cinched waist, deep-V neckline that falls past her breasts, and when she turns to hang her coat on a little peg next to the door, God help me, I spot the romper’s open back, exposing her lightly freckled skin.

There is no way I’m going to be able to be decent tonight, not with her dressed like that. Hell, I’m seconds away from pushing her up against the wall and showing her just how much I want her in my life again.

When she turns back around, she takes my hand in hers and walks toward the center of the house. “It’s so beautiful in here. How much have you renovated?”

She wants to talk renovation right now? Wearing that?

“Uh . . . what?” My eyes are glued to her breasts. There is no way in hell she’s wearing a bra, not with the way her nipples are poking out. She’s always had pert little breasts, but in this outfit, fuck, my mouth is watering just for one little taste.

She pulls my chin up, and I meet her eyes. “Hey, I’m up here.”

“Yeah, I know where you are. I’m just choosing to look elsewhere.” I pull at her hand, bringing her close to my chest, where I can easily run my hand up her bare back. Fuck, so soft, sosmooth. “This was a dangerous outfit to wear, Harper.”

“You think so? I thought it was rather conservative.” She gives me a wry smile.

“Bullshit. You knew exactly what you were doing. You want to drive me crazy, don’t you?”

“Just wanted to look nice.” She pushes away and walks along the back of the couch, her fingers trailing along the fabric. “And I’m pretty sure you knew what you were doing by not wearing socks with your jeans.”

“Bare feet don’t even come close to that romper.” I almost said bare foot but caught myself. Not right now.

She shrugs and makes her way around the main living space; I follow closely behind like a lost puppy dog. “So tell me what you did. Is there anything original still in the house?”

“Why don’t we start in my bedroom? I can tell you all about what I did in there.”

“Okay. Jen.” Thomas' shoulders relaxed in another small release of tension as he gave a slight chuckle. “just for future reference, you might want to think of another way of starting a conversation right after we’ve had sex other than ‘Can we talk?’ followed by ‘Have I ever told you about my past lovers?’”
“Ugh.” I slumped back a bit, groaning. “This is getting all twisted around…”
He laughed, then reached down, kissing the top of my head. “It’s fine. Just tell me what this is about.”
“In my past relationships, I…” I paused, letting out a small sigh. “Well, there have been certain things about them that were…well, aspects of them that have included…umm…” I wasn’t sure exactly how to approach this. This was not a conversation I’d ever thought I was going to need to have with him and coupled with the fact that the discussion had already gotten off to an awkward start, I was quickly beginning to lose my resolve to continue. However, Thomas was patient and didn’t press me.
“Certain,” I picked up where I had stopped. “…certain, uh, what people would call … kinky things.” I looked up at him, hopeful, expectant, and saw his expression change from mild uncertainty to one of bemusement.
“Kinky things?”
“Yeah, you know, kinky…sexual things.”
“Okay.” Thomas frowned, his brows knitting together. He was deep in lawyer mode, and I could almost see his brain attacking this. “Are we talking about things like the toys in your drawer?” He made a slight motion towards the nightstand on my side of the bed.
“Well,” I pursed my lips together, taking a deep breath, trying not to let my frustration show. “Those could be considered part of it, I suppose, but what I’m referring to are things that would be a little more…pronounced than that.”

Charlie had remained relatively quiet for the last two days. We both knew nothing would ever be the same, yet we weren’t talking about it. Neither of us admitted it out loud. Now, walking into Dr. Nesbit’s surgery center, the wound had festered until puss poured from it. It was infected, and it had the power to kill us. I kept trying to tell myself that this would all start to go away once we got through today, but it was a lie. Nothing would ever right this decision. The wrong could never be undone.
He had held my hand as we made through the parking lot. It was still dark out, and dew glistened on the flowers near the door. I’d managed to get the first appointment of the day, and while this wasn’t an abortion clinic, I was worried that everyone would know why we were here. My shame was amplified by the cover of night, and the drops of water on the grass only reminded me of things that were made anew…every day. If only I had faith the size of a mustard seed… I sighed and cast my gaze toward the ground, unable to take in any of the beauty God put before me. It was a painful reminder that I didn’t trust Him. That I believed he’d made a mistake, and that I, as a human, had the power to undo what He set forth. And since I was too weak to acknowledge His power, I refused to acknowledge His grace or His mercy.

I really should have dealt with the insurance issue before we’d come here, but I couldn’t bring myself to handle any more reality than I currently had on my plate.
My hands shook as did Charlie’s when I handed him the forms to sign after me. He could pretend all he wanted that he was strong, but the quiver in his signature said otherwise. The question became, were either of us strong enough to turn around and not do this. Could I face the possibility of losing it all to protect my children?
“Mrs. Burin?” A woman in scrubs stood at the open door to what I assumed was the surgical area.
Charlie stood and took the clipboard to the desk. He reappeared in front of me—where I still sat rooted in my chair—and held out his hand. I glanced at the lady who waited and then up at my husband whose eyes were the darked brown I’d ever seen them. They were laced with sorrow and remorse—and the deepest pain I’d ever seen in another person’s eyes.
I couldn’t do this.
I had to do this.
I took his hand and closed my eyes. And there in the waiting room, I prayed that God would give me the strength to pull off what I was about to do. I had to cleanse the wound that had grown between us, and it wasn’t going to be easy.
They weren’t born, but they were mine. And if I went through with this, I’d be no better than my own mother who’d left us for her own selfish reasons without ever looking back. But I’d be damned if I could live with that decision. I doubted I would make it through this pregnancy unscathed and maybe not even alive. But at the end of the day, regardless of what happened, I wanted my husband to be able to look our children in the eyes and tell them I had loved them enough to die for them. Because that’s what mothers do—they chose their children over themselves.
